About the district
Náměstí Míru with the Basilica of St Ludmila is the district's main hub: nearby cafés, restaurants, a farmers' market, two multiplexes, and the Flora shopping centre. Riegrovy Sady beer garden with views of Prague Castle is a favourite local hangout. Pharmacies and Billa/Albert supermarkets are scattered throughout.
Metro line A (green): Náměstí Míru, Flora, Želivského. Metro line C (red): I. P. Pavlova on the border with Nové Město. Four tram streets cover the whole district. To the centre (Můstek) — 7–10 minutes.
Pre-war apartment buildings with high ceilings and spacious three- and four-room flats predominate. Prices are above the Prague average but noticeably below Praha 1. New builds are rare — renovated historic apartments make up the main stock.
Several state primary schools and grammar schools, private kindergartens, language centres. The French Institute is within the district; Anglická grammar school is in neighbouring Žižkov.
Vinohrady is one of Prague's most peaceful and well-kept districts. Streets are well lit, the atmosphere is bourgeois and unhurried. Pickpocketing is almost non-existent — this is not a tourist area.
