01Infrastructure
The Masaryk shopping street hosts boutiques, restaurants, and cafés. Forum Nová Karolina is a large retail and entertainment centre on a former industrial site. The Ostrava State Theatre, Gallery of Fine Arts, pharmacies, and banks are all within walking distance.
02Transport
An extensive tram and trolleybus network lets you reach any part of Ostrava from the centre in 20–25 minutes. The main railway station Ostrava hlavní nádraží is 10 minutes by tram. Buses towards Ostrava Airport.
03Housing and prices
Multi-storey apartment buildings from the late 19th and early 20th century in Art Nouveau and Functionalist styles. Part of the stock is renovated; loft apartments are appearing in renovation zones. Purchase prices from 40,000 to 70,000 CZK per sq m; one-bedroom rents 9,000–14,000 CZK per month — lower than in Prague or Brno.
04Schools and kindergartens
Several state grammar schools and primary schools in the centre. University of Ostrava and VŠB — Technical University of Ostrava — the city's most important higher-education institutions. Language courses and private schools in abundance.
05Safety and atmosphere
A lively and well-lit centre. Police patrol the shopping streets. The area is active in the evenings, sometimes noisy near bars. Pickpocketing is the standard city-centre risk.
